MALE ARTISANS ON THE nails salon open

Male artisans on nails:  “Men must know what they do, they must know how to do nail work to make money for their family or to make money while waiting to change jobs. But once I have a career, I have to work hard, I don't have any time or pride when I make money to take care of my life and my family. ” Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dat, having been in nail art for 8 years, looks back at the job he is pursuing.

Hoa Vu, 21 years old, came to the US for 2 months, learned nail for 1 month "to find a job in the short term." In the picture: Hoa Vu is practicing "French painting" on the hands of a student in his class at Advance Beauty College, Garden Grove city. (Photo: Ngoc Lan / Vietnamese)

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sanh, 53 years old, nail art for more than 15 years, contemplating, “I never intend to quit this nail profession. Now my skills are good, my income is not low. I don't know if I quit this job, what better job could I find.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dat and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sanh are two of the many Vietnamese men who choose to work as a nail worker while settling in the United States.

When nail is almost becoming a "stamped" profession for Vietnamese refugees here, the increasing appearance of man nailing is also natural.

If Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sanh, a nail technician working at Palm Dale, thinks that when he started studying nail in 1993, the class had only "sparsely a few men," nowadays, according to Ms. Nga Tran , who is in charge of the "Manicuring" class at Advanture Beauty College in Orange County (commonly known as the "ABC School of Cosmetology"), "out of 70 students, about 20 will be male," that is. Male students account for about 29%.

This is quite consistent with a recent survey conducted by NAILS Magazine and Viet Salon in 2008-2009. According to this survey, in the US nail industry, up to 96% of nail technicians are women, only 4% are men.

However, if only limited to the Vietnamese community, the number of male nail technicians is up to 28%, while female workers are 67% (5% did not respond to this survey). Thus, the rate of Vietnamese men working in nail art is 7 times higher than that of "non-Vietnamese" ethnic groups.

The Vietnamese reporter goes to find answers to this problem through exchanges, conversations, and interviews with longtime nail salon men and those who have just entered nail schools to prepare for a career. "Earn rice" in the future.

Men choose nail profession

Vietnamese men work in nail art many times higher than men of other ethnic groups because Vietnamese are more nail technicians than non-Vietnamese.

The men choosing to nail job are usually because someone in the family has previously studied, has gone to nail work. Or when to settle in the US, both husband and wife choose to study nail. Opening the Classifieds page on Nguoi Viet newspaper, it is not difficult to find the items to find people like “Need a nail technician across the country. Ok couple, ”or“ Need a couple to cross-country, know powder, pink and white, under 40 ”...

“I thought I came here. English, u don't equal anyone, but keep feeling proud, why should I live? So in my spare time, after working as a silversmith, people tricked out of their capital, saw people go to nail school, I also went to try school, then followed the job. " Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dat, 40 years old, and his wife both own and work as a Glamor Nail salon in the city of Murrieta, about an hour's drive from Litte Saigon, said.

The fact that Mr. Dat does not feel narcissistic, or rarely sees "period" when he goes to nail school, is because at that time in his family, Dat's brothers and sisters and his girlfriend also followed the nail profession.

With Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sanh, 53 years old, a nail artist since 1993, the reason for his nail career started with thinking, “When I first came to America, seeing so many couples leaving each other too much, I did not want to marry. The family broke down like that, so I think only a couple working together can have time together and take care of their children.

After the couple's unsuccessful sewing work together, his wife moved to study nail. When driving his wife to school, seeing nail class, Mr. Sanh said to his wife, "this job is your job."

In addition, Mr. Sanh said that “recently, English is not good, nail work only needs to know how to be beautiful, then focus on improving, and English only needs to know a little to communicate. . "

Unlike Mr. Sanh, Mr. Dat, who used to "work in the fields," "traded" before going to the US, and "never thought that there was a time when I became a nail artist" then Viet Le, Hoa Vu, and Thanh Nguyen, have prepared thoughts and mentality "will go to nail" from before setting foot in Co Hoa land. The Vietnamese reporter met these three people at a "Manicurist" class at ABC Beauty School.
